Saving movies to a external harddive so we can swtich from Dish to DTV

Looking to make the switch from to Dish to DTV

We are looking to dump dish. However we have shows and movies we don't want to loose.We now have the hopper and from what we understand you can buy a bigger hard-dive to put with the genie for more storage. If we transfer our movies and content we want to keep from dish to a external hard drive will we still be able to see it on DTV via the external hard drive we put them on?
