I don't think that changing service providers will really help you because this sort of service charge is common among all of them.  DirecTV chose to make its $7/mo Equipment Protection Plan option, rather than force it on everyone.   So if the $50 service fee really bugs you, then you can get their Equipment Protection Plan and pay nothing extra.  Some providers just force you to pay that monthly fee rather than make it optional.
