Just an update. Everything is up and running and I'm successfully mirroring my living room programming to an additional hdtv in my garage. I had an Amazon $20 gift card and found a well reviewed powered HDMI splitter which is working great so far. I found a new RF DirecTV remote on ebay for about $8 and it works great from the garage. Thanks everyone for your help. So in total 44 dollars ($14 for 50' of HDMI cable, $8 for the RF remote and $22 for the hdmi splitter) to get this done.
