There is no way to turn it off and as you found it is a new feature for the Genies in the latest update, you can call or email DTV directly to voice your displeasure with this feature.

One thing I noticed is that the small DTV box that shows my "network" light - that light is usually off. What box is this?  Any model numbers? What model of receiver do you have. look for the model...

Peds - I simply moved the genie to another side of the basement.  The only reason I unplugged it was for ease of moving, not to reconnect it in any other fashion.  The cable does go directly to the SWM...

Use the internet to find where is being aired.  Then schedule using the guide.  Maybe a little bit tedious, but you are guaranteed to record your game.

FYI I had Dish for over 10 years and I just recently switched to Directv because of the Fox News issue 1 month ago.  Being able by mistake to record a channel you do not get was never a issue.

Keeping your DVR full will not cause any harm to YOUR device's hard drive. Although, keeping your DVR full may cause loading times to be a bit higher than usual.

The hard drive is running 24/7 and can fail at anytime so you will lose less programs if you can watch and delete them ASAP.
